The ISPRS SC Webinar Series

Earth Observation and Digital Transformation: an outlook from Infrastructure Engineering

Webinar Series

Abstract:

This talk presents the development of earth observation data and platforms, the practices, and their wider applications with a focus on digital infrastructure engineering. This presentation covers how digitalization revolutionized the way we live and design our cities. It presents case studies illustrating how techniques for accurate and precise data capture, object recognition, and interpretation are used in digital city design to integrate new information in cities digital models. The digital models of urban building footprints and their extraction, urban trees and their changes over time, urban transportation and their simulation, and the contributions of the internet of things (IoT) including industrial IOT as enablers of digital capabilities will be discussed. Also, there will be a discussion on the importance of digital protection and knowledge transformation capture in improving the future of the cities and our lives. This talk summarizes the above-mentioned points providing an outlook on digitalization from the infrastructure engineering perspective.

Author Bio:

Dr. Jagannath Aryal received his Ph.D. degree in Optimisation and Systems Modelling. He leads a research group on Earth Observation and intelligent digital solutions to societal problems. He works in the Department of Infrastructure Engineering at The University of Melbourne. His research focuses on the optimal utilization of Earth Observation, geo-information, and geo-statistics to develop new methods in object recognition. Objects of interest derived from sensing technology (Ground / Satellite based) are applied in modeling and mapping various urban systems taking sustainability and resilience into account. He currently serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Spatial Science (Taylor & Francis), and Remote Sensing (MDPI). He leads the Remote Sensing and Photogrammetry Commission of SSSI, Australia as a national chair. He is the course coordinator of the Master of Digital Infrastructure Engineering and Graduate Certificate in Digital Engineering Degrees at the University of Melbourne.
